1. Смешанная форма крупного и мелкого предпринимательства, при которой крупные корпорации, материнские компании (франчайзеры) заключают договоры с мелкими фирмами, "дочерними" компаниями, бизнесменами (франчайзи) на право, привилегию действовать от имени франчайзера.

При этом мелкая фирма обязана осуществлять свой бизнес только в форме, предписанной большой фирмой, в течение определенного времени и в определенном месте. В свою очередь франчайзер обязуется снабжать франчайзи товарами, технологией, оказывать всяческое содействие в бизнесе.
2. Специальная привилегия правительства или местных властей, заключающаяся в предоставлении фирме исключительного права на оказание определенных услуг, например перевозки пассажиров в данном районе, обеспечение населенного пункта водой, электричеством.

Система, при которой один экономический объект (например, фирма или даже государство) предоставляет другому экономическому объекту право действовать на рынке от его имени и часто под его именем (например, выпуск фирмой, вступающей в рынок, своей продукции под маркой старой и более известной компании). В ряде случаев термин Ф. означает передачу государством частной фирме права эксплуатации своего имущества и оказания некоторых услуг населению — например, когда муниципалитет передает фирме управление трамвайной сетью или водопроводом в городе с уплатой специального налога из получаемой выручки. Территория, на которой действует такой Ф., называется по-английски franchise area.
